Floor Coverings International Burlington ON serving the greater Burlington and Oakville area is all about eco-friendly flooring, and that includes cork! Cork is a great option for anyone wanting an eco-friendly, easy to maintain, and versatile floor.
Cork is a natural wood product derived from the outer bark of the cork oak, a species of tree native to the Mediterranean region. The bark is harvested from the trees without cutting them down. About one-third of the trunk is stripped approximately every nine years. The trees are able to live until reaching full maturity, about 150 years, and are then replaced by young trees.
Quiet is Key
Cork has a cellular structure that absorbs sound waves. Soundwave reverberation is significantly more reduced in a room with cork flooring than it is in a room with solid wood, wood laminate, or tile. Sound transfer is also reduced from adjacent upper levels of the building, especially if a cork underlayment is added to the cork flooring installation.
The numerous, tiny air pockets contained in cork retain surface heat and cause cork floors to be more effective for saving energy. Cork is more effective in the winter than other types of hard surfaces such as ceramic, stone, and vinyl. With its low thermal conductivity, cork flooring is also desirable for providing thermal insulation when installed over slab. In the summer, however, the effects of cork reverse. When airborne humidity levels rise, cork flooring has a cool, natural feeling and won’t stay warm like carpet would. Cork flooring does not trap humidity and will create a lighter air in the room.
Cork is an excellent flooring material because although it feels hard when you touch it, it’s slightly resilient. Its ability to bounce back after being walked on increases the life span of the flooring. In residential settings, cork flooring will last a lifetime if cleaned and maintained properly. Normal sweeping or vacuuming, wiping up spills immediately, and the use of walk-on mats in entryways are all that’s needed for daily care. For overall cleaning, a damp mopping will remove built up dirt without harming the cork floor.
