Carpet Styles

There are many distinct styles of carpeting that are distinguished by their different piles. Carpet pile is the visible surface material of the carpet, which is formed from yarn tufts that are connected to a backing material. The two main categories of carpet pile are ‘loop’ and ‘cut’. Loop pile is made by looping yarn threads onto the backing material, while a cut pile cuts the loops, leaving one end of the yarn strands unattached and extending out from the backing.

  • Berber

Berber carpet is a favorite kind of loop pile carpet known for its durability and ease of maintenance. Berber is generally composed of loops with a low profile and material that exhibits some color variance, which gives the carpet an appealing natural look. Berber is particularly well suited for high-traffic areas and is a favorite in commercial settings for this reason.

  • Frieze (pronounced “free-zay”)

In the past, you might have called this style of carpet “shag.” Frieze is a type of cut pile carpeting that has long, heavily twisted strands. This encourages the strands to bend in random directions, which helps to hide footprints and vacuum marks.

  • Plush

Plush carpet is also sometimes called “standard” carpet. This is due to the fact that plush is a very common carpet style and because it is a sort of middle-of-the-road carpeting with a medium length, lightly twisted or non-twisted pile. Plush carpet gives a smooth, velvety look to your floor, and is soft underfoot. It is a great choice for a room where you may spend time on the floor. However, it will tend to show footprints and vacuum marks.

  • Textured

A textured carpet may be a textured saxony plush or one that utilizes both loop and cut pile. A textured saxony is one that has a slightly longer and twisted cut pile. There are also textured varieties of carpet that use both loop and cut pile arranged so that a pattern is present on the carpet surface. Both of these textured varieties may be “trackless,” meaning they will do well to hide footprints and vacuum marks.
