Please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a stay-at-home mom with four daughters, ages 9, almost 7, 4, and 1. I’m currently homeschooling my oldest three (in grades 3, 2 and preschool). My husband and I both grew up in Alberta, then moved to BC a few years ago for school and now live in Vancouver, BC. When I’m not teaching or writing, I enjoy rock climbing, hiking and biking around Vancouver.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I started my blog eleven years ago now, when I finished my first degree (a B.A. in English). I’ve been a writer since I was about ten, and did my degree to learn more about writing. However, being in school didn’t give me much time to write, and when I finished school and started a full-time job as an editor, I still didn’t have much time to write.
I started my blog as a way to encourage myself to write. It gave me a space to write and (I hoped!) an audience. Since then, I’ve blogged about my marriage, our moves, and the births of my four daughters. My blog has grown into a site that encourages and inspires other moms. As a mom, I’ve learned the importance of connecting with other moms. I hope my blog can foster that sense of connection online.
What is your favorite type of flooring and why?
HARDWOOD! We’ve lived in seven different homes around Alberta and BC now. Five of those have had hardwood floors and I find them soooo much easier to keep clean. Carpet is hard to keep clean, especially with kids in the house, and especially when it’s white and in the dining room. 🙂
Right now I’m regularly dousing and scrubbing my carpet with Norwex carpet cleaner (which works wonders when you have white carpet and a toddler who likes blueberries), but I’d much rather be using my Norwex mop to just sweep and mop the floor in a few minutes. My dad was also a carpenter who really liked hardwood, and much of the furniture in our home was hardwood. I guess I get my love of wood grain from him.
Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration? If so, which ones?
Yes, I try to follow quite a few friends’ blogs plus other bloggers whom I look up to. One of my favourite blogs is another local blog, 5 Minutes for Mom, written by twin sisters. I also subscribe to YoYoMama, ModernMama and VancouverMom to find out about local events around Vancouver. For homemaking and decor ideas, I check out the Untrained Housewife and the DIY Mommy.
Can you explain a recent project or post you’ve been working on?
Sure! About two years ago, I wrote a small anthology about motherhood with four other mom bloggers. The project took us about a year to complete (our editor had health problems and one contributor lost her daughter in stillbirth), but our book is now available on Amazon and in print. As moms, we’ve all been busy with other projects (including our blogs) and haven’t had a ton of time to put into promoting Love Rebel. Once we finished it, we kinda moved on to other things…
This year, I’ve been trying to spread the word about it more and just created a free printable journal to accompany the book. The journal has quotes from the book and space for moms to record their own reflections on motherhood. My fellow authors and I have realized that our society doesn’t always support the work we do as moms. In our little book, we seek to encourage other moms in their vocation of motherhood, and to say that being a mom is very important. Love Rebel includes poems and essays with advice and encouragement for moms. I’ve also created a series of memes to share on social media; search #loverebelmom to see them.
